Trekking and local people
East of Bali lies Lombok, one of the small Sunda islands along with Bali. Take a trek to the Gunung Rinjani volcano where you will enjoy spectacular views of the water-filled crater Segara Anak from the lookout point or hike through the rice fields, plantations and fruit gardens of the small village of Tetebatu and see monkeys jumping from tree to tree before arriving at the picturesque Tibu Topat waterfall.
Learn about the unique culture of the local Sasak people, admire traditional rice barn-style houses and local crafts such as the weaving by village women of cotton grown in the fields into impressive fabric patterns. Visit the bustling Kebon Roek market in the capital Mataram, Pura Agung Narmada, the 1805 summer palace of the King of Mataram and Mayura Water Palace with its "floating pavilion" built in the middle of an artificial lake surrounded by Mangosteen trees.
