Islands of the four sovereigns
The name of the island ' Raja Ampat' means 'four sovereigns'; the area is so named after the four main islands, Misool, Waigeo, Batanta and Salawati. Surrounding them are numerous smaller islands. Local mythology tells the story of a woman who lays seven mysterious eggs, four of which hatch and become kings who rule Raja Ampat. Ampat's largest islands are Waigeo, Salawati, Batanta and Misool. In myth, the remaining three turn into a ghost, a woman and a stone.
Most of the islands rise from the crystal clear waters like jungle-covered rocks. The underwater world is the main attraction here, with an incredible variety of fish species in numerous colors and sizes. You will see many tropical fish, turtles, sharks and manta rays and so on. Small Papua villages can be found on some of the islands. In the jungle behind, it is possible to look for the rich bird life with birds of paradise, cockatoos and parrots.
