Protected wetlands, meadows and jungle in southern Laos
A hilly patchwork of jungle, vast wetlands with grazing cows and large waterfowl and green meadows typify Laos' Xe Pian National Protected Area. The large park is one of the top three protected areas of Laos where nature can still go full time. The more than 29(!) different ecosystems are the basis for an unprecedentedly rich and varied flora and fauna. During jungle treks you may encounter rare animals such as the Asian elephant, tiger, gold cheek gibbon, gaur, Asian wild dog, Asian black bear, honey bear, banteng and even the Javanese scale. Birdwatchers can also enjoy themselves here, in Xe Pian lives the largest variety of bird species of Laos, including the special double-horned hornbill.
Recommended is a homestay with the locals, as well as trekkings organised by them. They will be happy to tell you more about the customs of the Brau, Su and Lao Loum, the ethnic groups that live in the area.
