Land of Pagodas

Bhoeddist architecture

Myanmar is a valhalla for lovers of special architecture and religious monuments. Buddhism entered the country more than 2,000 years ago, and countless temples, pagodas and monasteries have been built over the centuries. Most striking are the elegant, white plastered pagodas or stupas, which seem to point to the sky.

You will be amazed by the wide variety of architectural styles and the different proportions. There are smaller, closed pagodas where a relic is preserved, and monumental multi-storey buildings and long galleries. Here you can wander past beautiful murals, giant Buddha statues, and all kinds of decorations in stone. They are all unica, so a visit to a pagoda is always surprising.

Not all monuments have stood the test of time. Earthquakes and exposure to the elements have sometimes had dramatic consequences. On the other hand, some pagodas and temples are extremely well maintained and richly decorated, often with a generous layer of gold leaf.

Bagan's landscape is dominated by pagodas and stupas. There used to be more than ten thousand pagodas here! Most of it has been lost, but Bagan still has a staggering 2,200 pagodas. Some pagodas can be climbed along the outside. The scramble is rewarded with an amazing panorama. Or are you going on a hot air balloon?
