Burmese history in a cultural and architectural mix
At first glance, Mandalay is a confusing cultural and architectural mix. Yet burmese history lies here on every street corner, and traditions persist. The authentic pearls of Mandalay justify a multi-day visit.
A four-metre high Buddha statue in the Mahamuni pagoda should only be approached by men. Devote worshippers rub sheets of gold leaf on the image as a sacrifice. The original shape is hidden under a lump of solid gold. Are you an early riser? Then come to the daily ritual wash of the face of this statue. Even the teeth are ritually brushed!
Don't wait until the hottest of the day for a climb to the top of the Mandalay hill. The stones then burn under your bare feet, footwear is not allowed here. Along the way there is a lot to see: Buddha statues, stone cobras, stupas, but the goal is the summit. There you will be rewarded with a grand view of the city and the Irrawaddy River. The very beautiful Shwenandaw monastery catches the eye. This monastery is entirely made of teak and richly decorated with carvings. You will see mythical creatures, animals, dancers and flowers, as well as scenes from the life of the Buddha.
The sunset is the perfect time for a walk over the U Bein bridge. The oldest and longest teak bridge in the world connects the shores of Lake Taungthman. Join strolling families and greet monks on their way to the nearby Mahangandayon monastery. It's a wonderful, straight 1.2-kilometre walk. Small boats will take you back to the city. You will then sit ringside to see the silhouette of the bridge.
