Culinary delights in the Himalayas
There is a lot of hard work going on in the Nepalese countryside. And so it takes strength. No less than twice a day it is on the menu. Dal bhat is an inescapable part of the life of an average Nepalese family. If you slide on, you will wait for a meal of white rice with a sauce of lentils and leafy vegetables. Preferably a little piro, spicy seasoned.
Nepali Thali in the restaurants is more varied and is prepared with many local dishes. 'Thali' means plate and according to Nepalese a good meal should be the perfect balance of the six different flavors sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy. Methods of preparation have been passed down from generation to generation.Momos are among the classics. The artfully folded dumplings are available everywhere. Food stalls with plastic chairs prepare delectable specimens. But also in the most luxurious restaurants the country is proudly available. In most cases you will find them filled with vegetables or chicken. But also potato or, more exclusively, beef momos are served.
Whatever they eat, the Nepalese wash it down with a cup of chai, warm sweet tea with milk. Less well known is that you can also go for a fresh cup of coffee in Nepal. In addition to their rice, many farmers in the valleys nowadays also grow coffee beans. For those who need something stronger, the raksiawaits. The rice beer is often brewed at home in large iron kettles and drunk a lot during festivals. During the trip it is definitely advisable to take a sip of this local delicacy as well.
