Horton Plains National Park

Peaks and beautiful views

Green, tall, wooded and mossy, rough and more than a few degrees colder than the rest of Sri Lanka. At an altitude of 2,000 meters, everything is different. The Horton Plains, a high-altitude grassland with high peaks and beautiful views, are the surprise of Sri Lanka. That is, if you get up early. Because after nine o'clock in the morning, when the rest of the country starts its day, the curtains close here. The clouds descend between the mountains and leave hikers in a white blanket of fog.

If you come before that time, you can enjoy pure nature. Steep cliffs and a kilometer deep abyss, mark the boundary of this park. At world's end vantage point, a simple stone feels like a throne. The view is powerful. Villages and tea plantations are no more than specks far below you. But don't just look down. On the horizon, the view extends many times further. Some claim to be able to see the whole country at once. Nothing stands in the way of the view of the south coast and the Indian Ocean.
