'Gathering of Elephants'
Less well known than the large natural parks in southern Sri Lanka, but certainly no less beautiful. The Minneriya National Park is the Asian elephant's favourite residence every year between June and October. Evening after evening the animals gather for a snack and a drink on the waterfront of Minneriya National Park. This 'Gathering of Elephants' is the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world.
In the dry season, more than 150 elephants gather here every night. Seduced by the large water basin and the fresh green grass. But also out of season the Asian elephant resides in this park. The varied nature, from dry forests to marshland, makes many feel at home here. Birds, deer, monkeys and bears. Even leopards are out here. But anyone who wants to see them has to go deep into the jungle. They skip the daily tea party on the waterfront.
