Fairytale Lake
Sun Moon Lake in Nandou, in the central part of Taiwan, is one of the most popular destinations for Taiwanese for its fairy-tale scenery, tranquility and excellent accommodations. Tucked among green mountains, the lake constantly changes its atmosphere: from gentle morning fog gliding over the water to warm sunsets that turn the hills golden. The area around the lake is inhabited by the Thao, one of Taiwan's original peoples. On the water, small ferries move between charming villages, such as Ita Thao and Shuishe, where the local atmosphere comes alive in cozy streets and a lively night market full of fragrant street food and artisanal snacks. For a special perspective, take the cable car, where the lake stretches out beneath you like a painting.
Cycling around Sun Moon Lake
One of the best ways to experience the area is by (rental) bike: a well-constructed path winds along the water, offering new views of bays, bridges and quiet temples each time. You will cycle past iconic sites such as the Wenwu Temple, majestically situated overlooking the lake, and the Ci'en Pagoda, where after a short climb you will be rewarded with amazing panoramic views. At one of the tea plantations, you can discover Taiwan's ancient tea culture.
