Sensational dances and enchanting costumes

Ask how the Junkanoo tradition started in the Bahamas and everyone will tell you a different story. Many believe it was founded by John Canoe, a legendary West African prince. Others suspect it comes from the French 'gens inconnus', which translates as 'masked people'. The most popular belief, however, is that it stemmed from the days of slavery, when slaves celebrated on their only day off in the year, December 26.

The Junkanoo,a colorful and carnival esk spectacle inspired by African culture, travels twice a year through the streets of Nassau and other cities in the Bahamas. Long before the spectacular parade, the exuberant participants are busy rehearsing their choreography and designing their imaginative costumes. They all compete for the prize of the most beautiful costume, the best music and the greatest spectacle.

These sensational party parades take place in Nassau, but you can also experience this on Grand Bahama Island, Eleuthera & Harbour Island, Bimini, The Exumas and The Abacos. Those who cannot attend the original Junkanoo around the turn of the year can also attend the Junkanoo Summer Festival on most islands of the Bahamas during the weekends from mid-June to mid-August. Each time you will be treated to an incredible colourful parade.
