Georgia Historic Buildings
In a country steeped in history , you can not miss the amazing historic buildings on a tour of Georgia . The remarkable Narikala Fort, which dates back to the 4th century BC, is located on the top of a hill near Tbilisi and dominates the skyline of the old town. Inside the fortress is the Saint Nicholas Church, beautifully decorated inside with ancient frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible and the history of the country. Built on the steep cliffs of the Mtkwari River, the Metechi Church was rebuilt many times. The current church, still important to many Georgians, was consecrated in the late 1980s.
Mtskheta, an old city in eastern Georgia, also has some beautiful historic churches. Legend has it that the famous Svetitshoveli Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built on the site of a part of the cloak of Jesus that he wore when he died on the cross. The Dzjavari Monastery is characterized by its medieval Georgian architecture and is located on the mountain Dzjvari from where you have a beautiful view of the city and surrounding mountains.
