Symbol of faith and resistance
The religious feeling of the inhabitants of Lithuania is certainly experienced during a visit to the impressive Hill of the Crosses. Crosses have been placed on this hill for over 150 years and it is an important place of pilgrimage. The place is controversial. So Soviets destroyed the crosses several times. Lithuania gained independence in 1990 and has been a must see for travellers ever since. There are now about 100,000 crosses and the number continues to rise. In 2001, this place was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
