Hotel of allure
The Macina, a 16th-century historical fortress, was built in 1554 by the Order of St. John and was part of a bastion to protect Senglea from invaders in the following centuries. In 2018, Cugó Gran transformed the Macina into a Maltesehotel of allure. The historic fortifications are a brilliant contrast to the minimalist modern interior and the bespoke luxury décor. Tucked away on the roof of the bastion is a unique swimming pool that offers panoramic views of the "three cities" of Senglea, Cospicua, Vittoriosa, the Grand Harbour and, across the road, on Valletta. Relax in one of the loungers and let your gaze wander the Mediterranean surroundings. Dine Al fresco, an unforgettable experience in the warmer months when the imposing bastions, fortress town of Birgu and spectacular harbour are illuminated by the traditional Festa fireworks.
