Aurora Borealis in the United Kingdom

The Aurora Borealis, more often called northern lights , is a natural phenomenon that occurs when solar particles interact with the atmosphere in the Earth's magnetic field. This releases energy, creating strange luminous green streaks across the sky that can be complemented by large areas full of beautiful pillars of light and even moving shapes in green but depending on the strength also in other colors such as pink or purple.

Best time and place

From September to the end of March is the best time to see the Northern Lights in the United Kingdom. Accompanied by local guides, you can hunt on clear winter nights; they know the ultimate locations and best conditions for seeing the light. There are no less than nine Dark Sky Discovery Sites on Skye, making it one of the best places in the country for stargazing and seeing the Northern Lights. Also, you can see the northern lights further north in Scotland in Shetland, Orkney and Caithness. You may also be able to experience this magical play of colors in the shire county of Cumbria in the northwest and in northern England in Northumberland, for example.
