This self-drive tour features easy-to-navigate routes through a lush green landscape of lakes and volcanoes, which you can explore at your own pace. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities in this area, such as hiking, rock climbing, or whitewater rafting. Or you can simply relax in one of the hot springs! You’ll stay at a unique lodge in Huilo Huilo National Park and end your trip at Lake Llanquihue —surrounded by volcanoes and dotted with German-style villages. From here, you can also visit the quirky island of Chiloé with its palifitos and wooden churches.
Tips & Highlights: Road Trip Through the Lake District in a Rental Car:
- From Pucón, you can take wonderful day trips; there are several national parks in the area. We highly recommend Huerquehue National Park. This park is known for its ancient Araucaria trees. You can enjoy a beautiful hike along a well-marked trail past lovely lakes and waterfalls.
- If you're looking for a spectacular experience, book a guided climb up the Villarica volcano. This volcano is covered in snow and has an active crater. It's a challenging climb, but you'll be back down in no time, sliding down in a special suit.
- Take a day trip around Lake Llanquihue, passing through picturesque villages and the impressive Osorno volcano. Then continue on to the enchanting Lake Todos los Santos and visit the beautiful waterfalls along the way.
- You might also consider taking the ferry to Chiloe Island, where time seems to have stood still. On Sunday mornings, there’s an interesting market on the island in the town of Dalcahue
- From Puerto Varas, you can take the one- or two-day Cruce de Lagos excursion by boat and bus to Bariloche in Argentina
