Caño Cristales

Caño Cristales is also called the most beautiful river in the world. In the months of July, August and September – that is, exactly between the wet and dry season – the river turns into a living rainbow. The five different colours are caused by the Macarenia Clavijera, a water plant that only occurs here. In winter there is too little sun and the water flows too fast, but as soon as summer arrives the plant blooms and causes the river to turn green, red, white, black and yellow.
