Tropical Islands near Pemba
At the coastal town of Pemba you can find the most beautiful coral reefs of southern Africa. Opposite Pemba is the Quirimbas Archipelago, a dozen tropical islands with endless beaches and coral reefs. The most famous islands are Ibo Island, Quilálea and Matemo. One of the islands is Medjumbe Island, located near the world famous St. Lazarus Banks, one of the world's most beautiful dive sites. Ibo island has a rich history. In the past Arabs drove here trade and the island was an important Portuguese slave market and trading post. Traditional silversmiths still work at the old fort and the town consists of a warren of alleys and historic buildings.
