THE SPIRITUAL RHYTHM OF A CITY
Dawn in Luang Prabang. Hundreds of Buddhist monks in saffron-coloured robes walk silently in rows through the streets. According to an ancient tradition – the Branch Bat – they go to the places where they receive handouts from the locals. In silence, humble and full of mutual respect. The monks then retreat to one of the dozens of temples. A new day has begun in Luang Prabang.
FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE
Although Luang Prabang has grown enormously in recent decades, the atmosphere has remained remarkably friendly. The historic heart of the city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you walk, you'll pass temples with golden gutter roofs, traditional Laotian houses and Ham Kham, the former royal palace. Here and there you will recognize a touch of France, the traces of the Franco-colonial past. A spirited climb to the top of Phou Si Hill is rewarded with a panorama of the city and its surroundings.
