Endless coastline along two oceans

Between the borders with Namibia and Mozambique lies more than 3,000 kilometers of coastline. Insanely beautiful beaches with impressively rolling waves, rugged sea and cliffs, lovely bays and coral reefs just below the water's surface, the variety is enormous. The western coast overlooks the Atlantic Ocean; the cold Benguela Gulf Stream determines the temperature of the water here. At Cape Point - south of Cape Town - the cold water meets the much warmer waters of the Indian Ocean. Here, on the contrary, the warm Agulhas Gulf Stream determines the pleasant water temperature and the rich marine life. Beautiful beach resorts can be found everywhere and the list of possible activities is endless. We follow the coastline from west to east.

Around Cape Town

Just north of Cape Town are Langebaan and Paternoster, with access to both somewhat warmer secluded bays and beaches directly along the cooler ocean. A paradise for water sports enthusiasts and bird watchers. Also an excellent place to kayak among rocks filled with cormorants and penguins. Several beaches around Cape Town are ideal for a day trip, or even a few hours of beach fun. Boulders Beach lies north, and penguins can be seen here as well. There are numerous secluded bays with rocks where the water in the tidal pools warms quickly, beaches where surfers can indulge, busier beaches with bars and restaurants, and deserted beaches with no amenities. The beaches east of Cape Point benefit from the warm Gulf Stream. It is possible to visit Hermanus as a day excursion. This is an absolute hotspot for several species of whales and large schools of dolphins. Swimming is possible here in enclosed lagoons. Where the world can't find you...

From The Hope Nature Reserve to the Wild Coast

The Hope Nature Reserve is first and foremost a unique hiking area. Further inland, you walk here through fynbos with 1,500 plant species and bonteboks, moose and ostriches. A coastal walk leads past white sand dunes, small beaches and rock pools full of starfish and octopuses. Hope Vlei is a Ramsar site with pelicans, flamingos, waders and ospreys, as well as the Cape otter. The vast sandy beaches around Plettenberg Bay and Jeffreys Bay are among the best surf spots with challengingly high waves, several boat excursions at sea, and diving sites with rays, seals, sharks and dolphins. The Wild Coast is indeed quite rugged, but there are also secluded bays - such as Chintsa - where nature is more lovely and extremely diverse, and where you can indulge in very diverse activities including a boat trip in search of the largest migration in the world: the Sardine Run. Every autumn, millions of sardines - the largest school in the world - provide additional spectacle here. The sardine migration is a unique phenomenon that attracts many marine hunters - humpback whales, sharks, seals and dolphins - and seabirds - including gannets and shearwaters. The sardines sometimes swim so close to shore that they strand en masse.

Subtropical enjoyment on the Dolphin Coast

Even beyond Durban, you can still witness this phenomenon. The coastal strip between Durban and the Mozambican border is known as the Dolphin Coast . In addition to dolphins, you will find miles of world-class golden beaches, the most famous being Salt Rock and Willard's Beach. Resort towns like Ballito and Umhlanga offer all the amenities you could want. The Dolphin Coast is great all year round thanks to its subtropical climate. Also nearby are top attractions such as the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park – with the Big Five - and the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, world heritage site with five different ecosystems.
