HERDS OF ELEPHANTS IN THE WILD
Located between the mountain country and the coast, Udawalawe National Park is known for the large herds of elephants that roam the wild here. In some places in the park you can observe more than fifty elephants at a time. They live in and around the large reservoir. After a heavy rain, beautiful temporary lagoons often form in other places in the park. Furthermore, particularly large birds of prey and water buffalo live in considerable numbers among the green jungle bushes, grass plains and ancient teak trees. The largest bird species in Sri Lanka is regularly spotted here, the Javanese marabou.
In addition to visiting Udawalawe National Park, visit the Elephant Orphanage, the Elephant Transit Home,where young elephants are cared for, cared for and protected until they are 4 to 5 years old.
