Borneo: unique flora and fauna
Spectacular rainforests, iconic wildlife, unique flora and coral-rich coastlines: Borneo is one of the world's largest and most biodiverse islands. The huge island, bisected by the equator, is shared by Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Indonesia (Kalimantan) and the oil-rich sultanate of Brunei. Impressive national parks are home to thousands of orchids, the giant Rafflesia as well as orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards and rare, colorful bird species such as hornbills, kingfishers and picturesque butterflies.
Malaysian Borneo: Sarawak and Sabah
Sabah and Sarawak form the heart of Malaysian Borneo and are a nature lover's paradise. Climb the imposing Mount Kinabalu, discover wildlife along the Kinabatangan River and Danum Valley, or hike the adventurous Headhunters' Trail in Gunung Mulu National Park. In traditional longhouses, the hospitable Iban share their ancient culture. A second paradise awaits underwater: the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, among others, is perfect for snorkeling and diving. Cozy cities like Kuching and Kota Kinabalu offer markets, street food and a relaxed atmosphere.
Kalimantan: ancient traditions
Kalimantan is rugged, pristine and steeped in tradition. National parks such as Tanjung Puting, Kayan Mentarang and Danau Sentarum are home to orangutans, proboscis monkeys, gibbons and countless bird species. Kalimantan is also called "the island of a thousand rivers. A boat trip on the Mahakam River offers a chance of crocodiles, hornbills and encounters with the indigenous Dayak, who still live according to ancient spiritual traditions. Banjarmasin's floating market, also called the "Venice of Asia," is an experience in itself.
Brunei: green, prosperous and authentic
The small sultanate of Brunei is a peaceful, safe and culturally interesting counterpart to the surrounding regions. Brunei is rich in oil and gas, but is also known for its strict nature protection. As a result, the country is among the greenest parts of Borneo. You will find pristine rainforest in Ulu Temburong National Park, accessible via an adventurous boat ride. The capital Bandar Seri Begawan surprises with golden mosques, the water village of Kampong Ayer, and impressive Islamic architecture. Brunei is ideal for travelers who want to combine nature with culture, tranquility and authenticity.
