The islands
The South Male Atoll consists of three inhabited islands, 16 resort islands and a number of uninhabited islands and is located south of the capital Malé. The three inhabited islands of South Male Atoll are Gulhi, Guraidhoo and Maafushi, the last two of which are of interest to travelers for its shops and charming fishing port. Spend a day shopping at Guraidhoo and Maafushi and end your day with a fresh seafood meal. From the resort islands you can take an excursion to one of the uninhabited islands.
Diving and snorkeling
The atoll is separated from the North Male Atoll by the 4.5 km wide Vaadhoo Kandu Channel and is a paradise for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. The eastern reef features shark-point where divers can spot reef sharks and white fin sharks. Dive into the underwater caves at Embudu that are teeming with exotic fish and brightly colored coral. One of the most popular dive sites in the Maldives is Kandooma Thila, an underwater coral island with corals, sponges and a wide variety of fish. Let yourself be carried away by the strong current in the Wadoo and Gulhi Canal, where large schools of sharks, rays and other sea creatures can always be found. There are countless dive sites in the Maldives.
Above water
Do you prefer to stay above water? Even then there are plenty of activities. Learn to surf, balance on a SUP and get into a kayak. Take a trip across the clear waters in a Dhoni, a traditional fishing boat. You may see dolphins while enjoying a beautiful sunset.
