The Eastern Cape has more than 40 national parks and nature reserves. In addition, there are also many small Private Game Reserves. In the Eastern Cape it is possible to admire malaria-free the famous Big 5 and even the Big 7.
“A trip to the Eastern Cape is not complete without catching a glimpse of these animals in their indigenous environment. The character of the region is embodied in these majestic creatures, taking you back to untamed Africa in its purest form. Spanning both land and ocean, the Big Seven is an African marvel that continues to inspire and intrigue.”
Four new areas have now been added to the Protected Areas list.
Lambasi
The first to be added to the list is Lambasi Nature Reserve (8810 hectares). This area consists of Tsitsa, Tina River Valley and Mzoboshe Horseshoe, part of the Tsitsa Falls Valley. The local housing community is still dependent on various charitable funds, its own agricultural production and the migrant system.
From a tourist point of view, the Lambasi Nature Reserve has a lot to offer: hiking trails, opportunities for climbing, a wide range of cultural attractions, ecotourism is a spearhead and of course you can admire the Big 5 here. The team at Lambasi Nature Reserve is therefore eager to further develop and put this pristine area in the Eastern Cape on the tourist map; the extensive opportunities in the area will entail economic development for the population. The local population will be closely involved.
Smaller nature reserves
In addition, an area of approximately 717 hectares in Nelson Mandela Bay (consisting of 310 houses in five villages, a hotel, a care home, a wildlife and training centre, a dog outlet park and a wedding and conference centre) will also become a nature reserve. The Uniondale area of the Kromme Rivers Altitude Nature Reserve (approximately 442 hectares) will soon be officially named a nature reserve and finally it will Baboon Gorge Hartland Nature Reserve added to the list, which is located in the Willowmore district.
With these official appointments, employment is expected to increase in these areas and the economy will pick up.
