Thousands of lechwes in the swamp
One of the best reasons for visiting the Bangweulu marshes is experiencing the limitlessness of this particular area. The infinite vistas towards the horizon, where air and water touch each other, give a feeling of unlimited freedom. Lake Bangweulu and the adjacent marshes are fed by the Luapala River, the region's main lifeline. On the shores of the lake and the marshes you will find traditional fishing villages, where it seems as if time has stood still. An extensive network of small canals, vast papyrus fields and grasslands form the habitat of the native Black Lechwe. Herds with thousands of lechwes trek across the plains, a spectacular sight. Next to the Black Lechwe, visit the Bangweulu swamps for exuberant bird life. Storks, pelicans and ibises are found here in large numbers. Rare for this area is the shy and rare 'Shoebill Stork', the shoecark.
