Romantics often don't get talked out about the pomp and circumstance in the Baltic States. Various countries have special castles, palaces and country houses with often an interesting and eventful history. They are the physical relic of a bygone era when the countries were still part of the Russian or Prussian empire. Elite built beautiful outdoor accommodation that the public can enjoy today. Take a look at the medieval city of Cesis in Latvia where there is a 13th century castle. The most visited and photographed castle is that in Trakai that dates back to the Middle Ages. It is located on an island in Lake Gave in Lithuania. The Rundāle Palace is a not to be missed highlight during a visit to Latvia. The palace has a long history of glory and decay and has been lovingly restored for decades and now in use as a museum.
