The once hidden cave city
Vardzia is an impressive monastery complex, carved by monks from a steep mountainside, and dates back to the 12th century. The complex consists of several floors and long corridors with countless living spaces. In its heyday, this once hidden cave town consisted of a church, a throne room and a complex irrigation system with watered terraced farmland. An earthquake in 1283 destroyed two thirds of the city, making the caves visible from the outside. Cave city Vardzia is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is largely on foot to visit and a not to be missed attraction during a tour of Georgia.
