1. Angkor – Cambodia
Angkor is undoubtedly one of Asia’s most impressive historical sites. The area around Siem Reap is home to a vast expanse of temples, ruins, and ancient structures from the Khmer Empire. The most famous monument is Angkor Wat, but Bayon and Ta Prohm are also absolute highlights. At Bayon, dozens of enormous stone faces take center stage. Ta Prohm, on the other hand, is known for its ancient trees, whose roots have intertwined with the temples. A special atmosphere envelops Angkor Wat, especially in the early morning, when the first rays of sunlight illuminate its distinctive towers.
2. Ranakpur – India
Nestled amid the green hills of Rajasthan lies the impressive Jain temple complex of Ranakpur. The temple is built of white marble and is known for its exceptionally detailed architecture. More than a thousand pillars support the complex. What’s striking is that each pillar is decorated differently. Sculptures, ornaments, and the play of light create an almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere. 4. Prambanan – Indonesia
On Java, near Yogyakarta, the tall towers of Prambanan rise into the sky. The temple complex dates back to the 9th century and is one of Indonesia’s most important Hindu monuments. The central temples are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The walls feature intricate reliefs depicting stories from the Ramayana. The reddish-brown brick temples are scattered throughout the greenery. Some structures are beautifully preserved, while others have been severely damaged by wars and the passage of time. Especially in the early morning, there is a special, almost mysterious atmosphere surrounding the ruins.
6. Wat Phou – Laos
At the foot of the sacred mountain Phou Kao in southern Laos lies Wat Phou, an ancient temple complex with roots in the Khmer Empire. Wat Phou is smaller and quieter than Angkor, but that is precisely what makes it special. The temples are set in an impressive landscape with views of the green Mekong Plain. The architecture is closely connected to the natural surroundings. The mountain behind the complex played an important role in the site’s religious significance. Wat Phou offers a beautiful blend of culture, history, and nature.
7. Temple of the Tooth – Sri Lanka
In the center of Kandy stands one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist shrines: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. According to Buddhist tradition, a tooth relic of the Buddha is enshrined here. This makes the temple not only a historical monument but also an important pilgrimage site. The temple is located on Kandy Lake and is part of a larger complex that includes various shrines and buildings. During religious ceremonies, the site is filled with music, rituals, and pilgrims.
