1. Penang – Street Food
On the island of Penang, off the west coast of Malaysia, everything revolves around street food. This is especially evident throughout the streets of George Town. As soon as the day begins, steaming woks and sizzling pans fill the streets with the aroma of herbs and spices. Chinese, Indian, and Malay influences come together here in dishes prepared fresh right on the street. Think of assam laksa, a spicy noodle soup with fish; char kway teow, stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp and vegetables; or nasi kandar, rice served with spicy curries and various side dishes.
2. Sarawak – A Night in a Longhouse
In the Malaysian part of Borneo, built-up areas quickly give way to dense greenery, winding rivers, and small villages. The state of Sarawak is home to various indigenous groups, including the Iban. Traditionally, they live in so-called longhouses: long, wooden dwellings where several families live together and most of daily life takes place communally. Spending the night in one of these longhouses offers a special introduction to the culture and traditions of the Iban. Eating together and spending the night in the longhouse provide a unique glimpse into life in the interior of Borneo.
3. Sabah – In Search of Orangutans
In northern Borneo lies Sabah, a state with vast rainforests and tremendous biodiversity. It is one of the best places to see orangutans in their natural habitat. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center is dedicated to the care and protection of these remarkable animals. During a visit, you’ll learn more about their way of life and the challenges they face in the wild. With a little luck, an orangutan might suddenly appear among the trees. Macaques, proboscis monkeys, and colorful tropical birds also live in the surrounding rainforest.
4. Malacca – A Journey Through History
Malacca is one of Malaysia’s most charming historic cities. Over the centuries, various cultures and rulers have converged here, from the Portuguese and Dutch to the British and Chinese traders. That history is still visible on the streets. Colonial buildings stand alongside colorful shops, temples, and old churches. The historic center is compact and therefore easy to explore on foot. As you stroll through the old streets, you’ll continually come across new places and stories from the past.
5. Kuala Lumpur – A City of Contrasts
Kuala Lumpur is a city where the old and the new coexist effortlessly. The Petronas Towers soar high above the skyline, while down below, small restaurants, markets, and temples define the streetscape. Modern shopping malls and tall office buildings stand side by side with colorful neighborhoods and narrow streets. During the day, the traffic can be overwhelming, but in the evening, the streets and food stalls really come to life. Amid the skyscrapers, there’s a surprising amount of everyday Malaysian life to discover. It’s precisely this combination of modern city and local culture that makes Kuala Lumpur so interesting.
6. Mulu National Park – Deep into the jungle
Gunung Mulu National Park, one of Malaysia’s most extraordinary natural areas, is located in northern Sarawak. The park is known for its enormous caves, steep limestone cliffs, and dense rainforest. Hiking trails lead deeper and deeper into the lush greenery, while a completely different world lies beneath the ground. The caves are home to large numbers of bats, and rivers flow through the limestone. It is the combination of jungle, mountains, and caves that makes Mulu so special.
7. Kinabatangan River – Wildlife from the Water
The Kinabatangan River winds its way through the rainforest of Sabah and is one of the best places on Borneo to spot wildlife. From a small boat, you’ll glide slowly along the banks, looking for movement among the trees. Proboscis monkeys sit high in the branches, crocodiles lie motionless at the water’s edge, and colorful birds fly low over the water. You’re most likely to spot animals in the early morning and around sunset.
8. Taman Negara – The Oldest Rainforest
Taman Negara is one of the oldest rainforests in the world and covers a vast area in the heart of Malaysia. Once you’re among the trees, the sounds of the outside world quickly fade into the background. Narrow trails wind between giant trees and dense underbrush, while the sounds of the jungle can be heard everywhere. A multi-day trek is when the rainforest truly comes to life. Spending the night in the middle of the jungle and continuing your hike the next morning makes Taman Negara a true jungle experience.
9. Perhentian Islands – Tropical Islands
After days in the jungle and bustling cities, the Perhentian Islands offer a welcome change of pace. Off the east coast of Malaysia lie two tropical islands with white beaches and clear blue water. Beneath the surface lies a colorful world of coral and tropical fish, making snorkeling one of the most popular activities here. During the day, you can take a boat to a quiet cove, go snorkeling from the beach, or simply relax with a book.
10. Sabah – Into the Mountains
The landscape of Sabah changes once again as soon as you leave the coast. Roads wind their way up through green hills and cloud forests, with Mount Kinabalu as the impressive centerpiece. Hiking through the mountains means getting up early, breathing in the fresh mountain air, and enjoying ever-changing views. The temperature here is much lower than in the jungle, making the landscape feel almost like another world. Along the way, you’ll find a variety of hiking trails, ranging from short walks through the mountain scenery to multi-day treks.
