Dense jungle, streams and rivers
A map of Laos reveals that the Bolaven Plateau is of volcanic origin. The eroded remnants of a truly gigantic, collapsed crater form the landscape that rises from the otherwise low and flat region. The fertile soil feeds the dense jungle, where streams and rivers find a way down. Sometimes they collapse into a deep ravine with thunderous violence. Whether you spend one or more days here, you will see countless waterfalls. Enjoy all those impressive and idyllic places full of ferns and mosses, noisily through the crashing water, inviting for a fresh dip.
COFFEE PLANTATIONS
The combination of a cooler climate and fertile soil is very beneficial for agriculture and horticulture. You pass plantations with fruit trees, rattan and kardamom, but above all the slopes are overgrown with coffee bushes. If you are a coffee lover, you can enjoy this: there is plenty of opportunity to taste freshly roasted coffee, and compare different varieties.
ETHNIC GROUPS
During your exploration, you will meet different ethnic groups. The Laven – from whom the plateau takes its name – but also Alak, Katu, Suay and Tahoy. In the particularly lively markets you will come across them. Multicolored clothing, the sweet smell of ripening fruit, snatches of conversation in a language you don't understand... your senses are constantly stimulated.
