Zipaquirá salt cathedral

Underground salt cathedral

Since the 16th century, salt has been extracted from the mountains surrounding the colonial town of Zipaquirá. In the early 1990s, a real underground cathedral was excavated from the huge salt stock (which contains the mountain). Miners and Colombian artists worked together to achieve this exceptional edifice. After the cross road in the cathedral, where each staging was depicted by a different artist, you will find yourself in the large dome hall decorated with bas-reliefs. At its lowest point, 180m deep, is the ship of the church with the two wings and the 16m high cross. The many images and columns are highlighted in a special way, making the interior seem very sober but also very modern at the same time. One of the absolute highlights of a visit to Colombia.
